ABOUT

What is Metco?

Modern Electric Tattoo Company opened in 2011 by veteran tattooer Billy Von. He has been tattooing since 1992 and was the original owner of Mad Dog Dermagraphics when it was located above Gutherie's Alley Cat Bar in 1994. Since then, Billy Von has traveled all over the United States applying his craft. He has been featured in several tattoo publications, television, and on film.

Billy Von strives to create an unique atmosphere for both artists and clientele. We don't just hire any ol' tattooer or body piercer to be part of the Metco Crew!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

DOES IT HURT?

Of course you will feel some discomfort when receiving a tattoo, but it's more of an annoyance than it is painful. It's almost the same feeling as if someone was rubbing your sunburn. Piercings can be a little more painful; however, they are a much quicker process and the pain only lasts for a few moments.

WHY DO YOU REQUIRE DEPOSITS?

Often, we will have hours of work in drawing and preparing for a tattoo before you sit down in our chair. Deposits help to ensure you show up for your appointment and that we haven’t done hours of work preparing for nothing.

WHAT IS YOUR SHOP MINIMUM FOR TATTOOS?

Our shop minimum is $60. You might not realize it, but we go through nearly the same amount of quality supplies to do a tattoo the size of a quarter as we do for a tattoo the size of a softball.

SHOULD I TIP?

You should ALWAYS tip those who provide services for you. Whether it’s your barber/hairstylist or waiter - if they provide you a service, you should tip them.

This includes your tattoo artist and body piercer.

WHAT IS THE AGE REQUIREMENT FOR GETTING PIERCED OR TATTOOED?

Kern County Health Department determines the ages we are able to work on. For tattoos, you must be 18 years old and have the proper identification. For piercings, we can do earlobes for those under age 12, but it will be by our piercer's discretion; our piercer will stop and not do the piercing if the child says no. Age 15 and over, we can pierce just about anything with parental consent (photo IDs for child and parent - these are required for anything we do on a minor). Genital piercings are for those 18 and over only!

SHOULD I WALK IN OR BOOK AN APPOINTMENT?

We always encourage people to book an appointment for tattoos of any size. First, this guarantees you will get in at a certain time, with the artist you prefer, without potentially waiting for hours. Second, it gives our artists the chance to design your new tattoo so that it’s unique to you. For smaller tattoos, if we have openings feel free to walk in or call ahead of time.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M LATE TO MY APPOINTMENT?

Please don’t be. Seriously. If you’re late to your appointment, it will throw our schedule off for the day.

WhaHOW

HOW DO I RESCHEDULE?

If you need to reschedule your appointment, please contact your artist 24 hours in advance so you will not lose your deposit. This allows us to shift our schedules around for our other clients, or post on our social media that we are available for walk-ins.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I NO-SHOW DURING MY APPOINTMENT?

If you no-show, you forfeit your deposit.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY TATTOO SESSION?

Make sure you are well rested, well hydrated, and have eaten recently. Aside from that, take a shower, charge your phone or tablet up to full, and don’t bring in 10 of your closest friends.

(1 polite guest is allowed - ABSOLUTELY NO CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED IN PROCEDURE AREAS UNDER CALIFORNIA STATE LAW).

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY TATTOO SESSION?

It’s more important to be comfortable than to be fashionable. Don't wear something you don't want ink to get on. Looser is better than tighter; and keep in mind you want to be able to cover up certain places that might show, depending on where you're getting your tattoo - we have privacy curtains available, but sometimes that isn't comfortable enough for everyone.

HOW SHOULD I PLAN FOR A LARGER TATTOO?

First thing, set up a consultation with one of our artists. The best large pieces always begin with a plan, not just bits and pieces tied together. We can do a sleeve or back piece with existing work in place, but it will always look better when you come in with an idea and allow the same artist to help bring your designs to life. Also, it’s going to take multiple sessions and cost can be broken up in to those sessions. So plan ahead and save your money so that you can enjoy these large pieces as they are investments and commitments.

WHEN SHOULD I NOT GET TATTOOED OR PIERCED?

When you are:

  • Drunk or high

  • Pregnant

  • Pre-Surgery or post-surgery

  • When you don’t know what you want

  • When you can’t afford it

  • When you’re sunburned

  • When you haven’t showered

  • When you have your kids with you

  • If you don’t have an ID

  • Being pressured into it

  • When you’ve been told by us that your idea is bad
